This past Summer Mike and I went to Montreal for the Osheaga music festival. Loving food as much as we do, we made it a point to visit some of the city’s most popular cafes and restaurants. One of our favourites was St-Viateur Bagel, a 24-hour cafe serving up – you guessed it – some of Montreal’s best bagels. Mike’s choice (which he absolutely loved) was the famous bagel with cream cheese and lox, topped with capers and onions. For a Christmas surprise I decided to help him recreate the experience. I tried hunting down all the ingredients, but had to substitute a poppyseed bagel and yellow onion for the Montreal-style bagel and red onion of the original. Despite these tweaks, he loved it and has been sneaking smoked salmon on the shopping list ever since.
